Travelling Light: How To Create a Compact Hijabi Wardrobe

Thursday, July 06, 2017

If you’re a frequently travelling fashion girl, then a travel capsule is an absolute necessity. You do not need hundreds of clothes to fuss over every time you go travelling. Owning just the basic and absolutely necessary items in your wardrobe makes your life much easier by helping with decision making and lowering stress. Most importantly, it will save you tons of time and money so you can invest them in more important things.

Do remember that these tips and suggestions are just to help you build the basic structure of your travel capsule, you’ll always have to modify it depending on the place you’re going to, its weather and the number of days you’ll be travelling for.

The Most Important Item for a Hijabi’s Wardrobe

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of a hijabi’s travelling outfits? Hijabs! (Duh). And yes it should always be the first thing to decide on when you’re thinking of travelling. By selecting your hijabs first, you can build the rest of your wardrobe around them.

So go ahead and pick the hijabs that you absolutely love and make them part of your wardrobe. However, make sure that is not the only criterion you apply to your collection of hijabs – I strongly advise you to select good quality hijabs made of breathable fabrics.

Ideally if they are in different colours and patterns at the same time as you should have one each of all of these: a printed statement hijab, a bright solid coloured hijab, a black hijab, a fancy hijab and a neutral coloured hijab.

Next Step

The next thing to choose would be your accessories. It’s always a good idea to match your accessories with your hijab because if they don’t go well together, they can pretty much ruin the whole outfit. And as girls, we just can’t have enough shoes and bags, can we?

Well, once again, start by choosing the best quality ones and get rid of any items that are in bad condition or that you haven’t used in the last two years. You can give away the extra ones as charity, gift to someone or sell them online or at thrift stores. You can have a maximum of three pairs of shoes in your travel wardrobe. At least one of these three must be good quality walking shoes and another one should be some presentable shoes for formal events.

The Final Step

And last but not the least, we come towards the outfits. We can just not stress enough how important quality is. Good quality outfits will not just last longer but they will also make sure that you stay comfortable and most importantly, they’re good for the environment as well as your skin. It’s also a good idea to go for fabrics that don’t wrinkle much so you don’t have to worry about getting them ironed when travelling.

Don’t feel restricted to neutral colours or plain outfits because since you’ve already chosen your hijabs and accessories, you can pretty much go crazy and choose all outfit styles that you love such as stripes and floral prints.

A Hijabi’s Shortlist

But remember to keep track of the number of items as you should surely not have more than five pieces of any clothing item. The essentials for most hijabis include, (but are not limited to):

  • Jeans
  • T-shirts
  • Maxis
  • Skirts
  • Layering pieces like kimonos, blazers or cardigans
  • Tank Tops
  • Leggings/Tights
Once you’ve selected the ones you want to keep, go ahead and make sure that they go with the accessories and hijabs that you selected and that there’s some sort of harmony in the outfits, even if you go for colour blocking. By selecting just a couple of these basic clothing items, you can create hundreds of different modest outfit combinations.

The most important part of a girl’s travel wardrobe is always her creativity so make sure that you keep your creative juices flowing and choose what makes you feel good. Because if you feel good when packing, you’ll surely feel great when travelling!
